Summary:

This Case Study outlines creative methods that were used to enable disabled children’s voices to be heard. As an underrepresented group, the “voices” of nonspeaking and non-ambulant disabled children and young people are often excluded from research. This study sought to adapt qualitative approaches to authentically hear their voices, including exploring their consent/assent. The reader will learn about the methods used, which include sandboxing, observations, diaries, photographs, and interviews in the case study design. The methods were selected according to the participant’s intentional behaviors. This included participants who used augmentative or alternative communication means, including eye gaze technology. The challenge of analyzing these unique data is discussed as well as the power dynamics in the researcher relationship. By engaging in this creative way, the disabled children’s intentional behaviors can be interpreted to hear their voices. This enables them to advocate their own choices.
