Summary:
This case study draws on a research project comparing the strengths-based perspectives of unhoused youth (a historically underrepresented group) and housed youth involved in 4-H programs (a traditionally well-studied group in youth development literature). The research was designed to—and could help other researchers—elevate youth voice and facilitate inclusive dialogue about strengths and growth across divergent lived experiences. Readers will learn about the special attention given to ethical, trauma-informed design, and reflexive facilitation of focus groups to ensure the inclusion of unhoused youth, whose perspectives are often absent from theory-building. The study revealed critical insights about how unhoused youth conceptualize happiness, identity, and resilience differently than their housed peers—insights made possible through a deliberately inclusive approach for youth from different ecological contexts. This case will be particularly useful to researchers committed to more equitable, contextually grounded methods and models in youth development/policy/programs and the social sciences more broadly.
