This case study demonstrates how Inclusive and Intersectional Process Tracing enhances causal analysis in qualitative research. Drawing on original research within the Joint Initiative for Strategic Religious Action (JISRA) in Shekhan District, Iraq, it investigates how an externally introduced interreligious peacebuilding program was locally internalized, culminating in the Peaceful Coexistence Commission (PCC)—an interfaith institution established by local religious leaders without direct instigation from JISRA. This ongoing research combines explaining-outcomes process tracing, in-depth interviews, and participatory causal mapping with local stakeholders to identify the mechanisms that produced the PCC as a locally owned outcome.By embedding inclusivity and intersectionality within process tracing, this approach addresses common methodological and practical challenges in religious peacebuilding research—particularly the tendency of researcher-practitioners to rely on unexamined assumptions about cause and effect rather than systematic, evidence-based causal analysis to predict the impact and aspirational outcomes of their activities and practices. The study demonstrates how integrating emic perspectives, managing power asymmetries in participatory sessions, and attending to intersecting identities produces richer, more accountable explanations of social transformation leading to more authentic local ownership.This case study will be useful for graduate students and peacebuilding practitioners alike.
