- Summary:
- This case study documents the methodological journey of investigating impulsive buying behavior in the apparel industry, using the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) model as a conceptual framework (Mehrabian & Russell, 1974). The research was conducted in the urban retail context of Bengaluru, India, focusing on both offline and online consumer environments. The aim was to understand how various external stimuli—such as store layout, sensory experiences, digital promotions, emotional cues, and psychographic traits—influence spontaneous purchasing decisions (Rook, 1987; Beatty & Ferrell, 1998). A quantitative research design was adopted, with data collected through a structured questionnaire administered to 401 respondents. The study employed Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to validate constructs and examine the relationships between key influencing variables (Hair et al., 2019). Particular attention was paid to ensuring cultural relevance in survey instrument design and achieving demographic representation reflective of the city’s diverse population (Malhotra, 2010; Bryman & Bell, 2015). This case study not only outlines the theoretical grounding and research design but also highlights the practical challenges encountered—such as data collection during mixed-mode retail exposure, ensuring sample adequacy, and interpreting behavioral nuances across platforms. Ethical considerations, such as informed consent and data confidentiality, were rigorously observed throughout the study. By detailing the real-world process of operationalizing a theoretical model in a dynamic consumer market, this case offers valuable guidance to students, early-career researchers, and marketing professionals. It showcases how methodological rigor, contextual adaptation, and analytical clarity can be effectively balanced in consumer behavior research. The insights drawn provide actionable implications for both academic inquiry and industry application in the evolving field of retail marketing.
