Summary:

The Indigenous Diabetes Health Circle serves communities by providing culturally grounded resources and frontline health worker support to promote wellness. Resources that present men in strengths-based ways are lacking yet necessary to meet their needs. This study used a community-engaged approach to research to better understand the experiences of Indigenous men and to co-create a video depicting their stories. The co-creation process is essential to building resources grounded in culture and men’s perspectives. A Steering Committee led by Indigenous men and Elders ensured that the resulting video reflected their perspectives and emphasized their priorities in engaging ways. This Case Study highlights key aspects of the co-creation process and our community-engaged approach to research, such as prioritizing representation from target groups to ensure that outputs are both reflective and impactful of their experiences. Difficulties in engaging men in health-promotional activities are discussed, alongside of how their distinct perspectives were effectively embedded in project outputs, lessons learned, and strategies for success.
