- This case explores the methodological, ethical, and practical dimensions of conducting suicide prevention research in collaboration with people who have lived and living experiences of suicidality. Drawing on two projects focused on suicide prevention in high-risk public locations—one funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and one by a well-known UK charity—it examines how collaborative practices can be meaningfully embedded throughout the research process. The case highlights the benefits of lived experience involvement, including the expansion of knowledge, disruption of taken-for-granted assumptions, and the cultivation of more equitable and democratic forms of knowledge production. It also addresses key ethical and practical challenges, such as fair remuneration, emotional safety, and avoiding extractive or tokenistic practices. Central to our discussion is the importance of care, reciprocity, and community-building as foundations for sustainable, inclusive research relationships.
