Summary:
This case study is based on original research exploring how self-service technologies (SSTs) contribute to service excellence in tourism. The study examined whether the indirect effect of SSTs’ characteristics on perceived service excellence via satisfaction varied across different types of tourists. The research uses Hayes’ PROCESS Macro and moderated mediation to model conditional effects, revealing nuanced differences between business and leisure travelers. This study suggests PROCESS Macro and moderated mediation analysis as a methodological approach for conducting more inclusive quantitative research.Drawing on a cross-national study on international travelers from five countries, the case demonstrates methodological and practical challenges in multilingual data collection, cultural translation, and ethical collaboration with travel agencies. This case presents a replicable, ethics-minded workflow for identifying and responding to differences across under-represented groups. It also provides guidance for substituting moderators to study marginalized subpopulations (e.g., age cohorts, non-native speakers, disability status, socioeconomic segments). The case provides technical and ethical insights into conditional process modeling for inclusive quantitative research. The lessons learned are applicable across disciplines and offer practical guidance for designing ethically grounded and methodologically flexible research projects. It is particularly useful for postgraduate students and early-career researchers seeking to integrate robust statistical analysis with inclusive, ethically grounded research design.
