Summary:
Power relations are inherent in qualitative research, where knowledge is co-created by researchers and participants. These dynamics shift throughout the research process, influencing participant recruitment, data collection, analysis, and dissemination. Researchers’ social, professional, or cultural positions can subtly shape participants’ responses, whereas ethical challenges such as selective reporting may further distort findings. Addressing these imbalances requires awareness of power dynamics, reflexivity, power consciousness, reciprocity, minimizing subjectivity, and maintaining transparency with participants and readers. This How-to Guide examines these dimensions of power relations in qualitative research and offers practical guidance for both early-career and more experienced researchers. By presenting theoretical content supported by practical examples, this guide aims to assist researchers in understanding and applying qualitative methodology. The recommended resources—including web-based ones—and the final quiz are intended to strengthen researchers’ skills in effectively navigating qualitative methodology.
