- Based on a longitudinal mixed methods research project conducted in multiple elementary schools in the United States, this case study details the challenges, tensions, and complexities of racial identity when conducting research with marginalized youth in education settings. From a critical reflexive stance, I examined these issues across a 10-year span inclusive of initial research design, implementation, initial data collection and analysis, subsequent rounds and iterations of the research, and multiple academic presentations and publications. I explore multiple dimensions of this difficult issue with specific foci on the intersections of multiple components of the research process and methodology. Areas of emphasis include participant self-identification (including the fluidity inherent in youth practices), parent/guardian (sometimes strategic) identification, school and government categories, multiracial identities, congruency and alignment with prior research and literature reviews, regional cultural variance in terminology and language practices, and navigating identity politics and terminology demands in the publication process. Understanding race as a social construct that varies by place and space, and changes over time provides a useful frame to begin to reconcile these emergent tensions and to develop imperfect but more functional approaches in future research endeavors.
