Summary:
This case study examines the use of photovoice as an inclusive and accessible participatory action research (PAR) method, particularly well-suited for engaging historically marginalized populations. In the study described, researchers collaborated with nine emerging adults with intellectual disability enrolled in an inclusive postsecondary education (IPSE) program in the United States, aiming to create a platform for participants to share their lived experiences and raise awareness about their self-determination and agency within their college community. The study highlights key principles of conducting equitable and accessible research, details the photovoice process and shares lessons learned, particularly around inclusive data interpretation. Central to this work is the role of researcher positionality in shaping study design and in the coconstruction of knowledge with participants. By reading this case study, readers will be able to recognize best practices for inclusive photovoice research, apply reflexive awareness of their own positionality, and conceptualize and plan a PAR project from beginning to end.
