Summary:
This case study discusses the challenges of collecting data in the midst of a pandemic. The initial research design was to collect data via in-person face-to-face interviews in various cities in Malaysia. However, due to the pandemic, subsequent lockdown and the health risks involved in meeting face-to-face for an interview, the researcher decided to conduct online interviews with the participants. The process of conducting online interviews required the researchers to select suitable apps to be used to ensure the convenience and comfort level of the participants. An unexpected crisis such as a pandemic can require researchers to use alternative methods, ideally without deviating too far from the initial research design. Understanding such challenges is important when selecting a research design that is suitable for the study and the community being studied.
