Summary:
This case study is primarily a reflection on the author's real experiences of doing extensive online political surveys with two scholars at more than 35 universities across the 7 big regions of China during 2015–2018. These surveys are intended to collect data for two large research questions: (1) if China is or will be a revisionist country; and (2) the attitude of college students toward the performance of the Chinese communist regime and democratization in China. This reflection is based on the experiences of the first phase of a planned 10-yearlong project. It will address the following issues: the origin, rationale, and expansion of the project; the design of an online political survey that is applicable to a politically sensitive environment; the process of executing the surveys along with ways to solve the problems in this process; and finally a discussion of the lessons learned, results from data analysis as well as plans for the future. These experiences will have practical values for the students and scholars who conduct overseas surveys in general and research in China in particular.
