- Summary:
- This case study focuses on an interdisciplinary, collaborative research project that included training of undergraduate research assistants, virtual team meetings, online data collection, and coding. Specifically, we focus on the challenges encountered during the process of gathering online political statements and press releases from government offices after they have been released and have been subject to periodic, unplanned updates. In addition, we emphasize the complexities of the procedure of transforming these political statements and press releases into meaningful coding categories for future data analysis. This case study is an example of mixed-methods data collection and coding in action. In July 2020, our research team started a project to study the role of religious groups during national disasters like hurricanes. We initially planned on collecting data in person such as interviews with governmental representatives and community stakeholders, and online from various news websites, government publications, and multimedia from religious organizations (e.g., websites and social media). We had to pivot our project in both focus and methodology, however, due to the in-person data collection limitations imposed by the SARS-Cov-2 pandemic and a shift in research priorities for academics, funders, and the general public. In this case study, we discuss the steps of the research process including the research design and methodological approach. Our mixed qualitative and quantitative methodology supports the need to remain flexible and adaptable during the data collection process. Readers will learn about common obstacles for online data collection and the coding of content. As a pedagogical tool, this case will help other researchers and students learn how to pivot a research project, adjust their methodological approaches, recognize limitations, and develop solutions as they carry out their projects.
