Summary:

In this case study, we present learning from the first author's PhD research around cisgenderism in sports communication. Specifically, we engage critically with online interviews which involved using media materials as discussion prompts and were used to collect a large part of the data for the project. We deploy feminist reflexivity to consider how cisgenderism was both colluded in and avoided in the process of conducting these interviews. First, we examine instances of problematic language use and then consider how to balance data collection with feminist principles of allyship. We then explore the role of "insider" and "outsider" status before thinking about this in relation to interviewing in online spaces. These examples demonstrate the role of cisgenderism in the practicalities of online research and offer important vignettes to learn from. We provide an explicit discussion of what we can learn from these experiences, particularly around the role of reflexivity, interviewing in online spaces, and teaching and learning in research interviews. We advocate for the role of feminist reflexive analyses in research as a way of noticing and managing the "mundane" or everyday and difficult to spot aspects of prejudices, such as cisgenderism.
