Lived-experience researchers are increasingly encouraged, if not expected, to draw on their own embodied and often traumatic histories as a source of knowledge through reflexive or critical autoethnographic research. Yet, the neoliberal university is rarely willing or able to adequately support the profound personal, cultural, or existential toll that undertaking this type of ethnographic research may entail. Although undertaking critical reflexive research can be transformative, what constitutes healing when it unearths trauma? Practical guidance on care from this type of research remains limited. In this How-to Guide, I recount some of the personal, relational, and existential harms throughout my research journey, reflecting on what helped and what hindered my progress and way forward. Grounded in racial dignity as praxis, this guide shares some of the language and conceptual tools I used to make sense of what was happening within and around me throughout my academic life and also some of the strategies that helped me survive, resist, and heal. This guide addresses the key personal, ethical, and methodologic challenges I faced as a lived-experience researcher undertaking critical reflexive trauma-based research during my masters and PhD work and my work as a research assistant that at times was liberating and transformative but also (re)traumatizing. Through this guide, I encourage fellow researchers, particularly early-career ones, to reflect on some of the possibilities and vulnerabilities involved in undertaking critical reflexive or autoethnographic research and what they might need to care for themselves in this deeply personal type of knowledge making.
