- Summary:
- This How-to Guide details how to cultivate a research ethic of care when working with trans and gender-diverse youth. It outlines the key principles of community-based participatory research and demonstrates how these principles can be integrated into human-centered digital research using the example of the digital walkthrough interview. In doing so, this guide highlights how community-based participatory research strives for more inclusive and equitable collaboration between researchers, community members, and other stakeholders by exploring themes and issues of practical relevance to communities engaged throughout the entire research process, in community settings, and via its orientation toward social justice. This guide offers a range of methodological tools for shifting the power dynamics between researcher and participant by giving participants more agency throughout the research process, which we argue is of particular importance when researching with communities that have historically experienced and continue to experience harmful or stigmatizing research. Relatedly, this guide exemplifies research that advocates for a strength-based approach that recognizes trans and gender-diverse young people’s whole selves and centers participants as experts in their own lifeworld.
