Summary:
Due to increasing cultural diversity driven by globalization and expanding research capacities worldwide, there is a necessity to reduce exclusion and produce knowledge that is ethically useful for all including underrepresented groups. Cultural humility is a part of this aim that frames research as a relationship that requires a researcher’s ongoing self-critique, careful attention to power, and respect to the people whose lives and experiences form the study. This guide demonstrates how cultural humility could be relevant in inclusive research by assisting researchers to go beyond checklist ticks to “cultural competence” and approach practices that share authority across the research process. Readers will learn how to clarify positionality, identify power imbalances, and apply cultural humility in qualitative research design, recruitment, consent, data collection, analysis, and representation. The guide also gives practical strategies for codesign and community advisory input, communicating respectfully in cross-cultural and gender-sensitive contexts, and responding ethically when misunderstanding or harm occurs. By applying cultural humility as a methodological stance, not only a personal value, researchers can strengthen trust, reduce extractive dynamics and power relations, and produce interpretations and results that better reflect participants’ priorities, risks, and forms of expertise.
