- Summary:
- This case study draws on original research exploring the career progression of ethnically minoritized professional services staff in UK Higher Education, commissioned by the Association of Heads of University Administration. The study addresses a critical gap in sectoral understanding by focusing on the lived experiences of professional staff who are often overlooked in diversity and inclusion initiatives. Through semi-structured interviews and focus groups, the research team employed trauma-informed and ethically sensitive practices to surface structural and cultural barriers to progression. A key methodological innovation was the integration of a participant-led approach in interviewer selection. Participants were empowered to choose their interviewer from a diverse research team via a booking system supported by detailed bios and photographs. This approach aimed to reduce power imbalances, establish trust, and enhance data authenticity. The case study examines the practical and ethical challenges of implementing this method, including logistical coordination, digital accessibility, and researcher well-being.Reflexive practice and intersectional accountability were central to the research design, with researchers critically engaging with their own positionalities and the dynamics of identity matching. The case study will be beneficial for qualitative researchers working in equity-focused contexts, offering insights into how transparent research principles can be embedded to promote inclusion.Readers will learn how to operationalize a participant-led approach, navigate identity politics in qualitative research, and apply specific trauma-informed frameworks by integrating principles of safety, trust and empowerment through the adopted interview selection process. The case study provides a replicable model for equitable research practice, with implications for data quality, researcher-participant relationships, and ethical rigor.
