Summary:

This dataset is designed for teaching a culturally appropriate visual method for social research with Indigenous peoples on identity and relationships, with applicability to varied research contexts. It provides three examples of “My Island” artworks with accompanying Yarning excerpts. “My Island” sits within Art Yarning, a visual research method integrating art therapy tools and Australian Indigenous cultural knowledges, and it can also function as a standalone visual method. The data were generated through community-partnered purposive sampling with Indigenous participants. The exemplar guides readers through the knowledge and skills needed to implement this method in their research design. Learners will understand procedure, data handling, and analysis while engaging with key concepts such as Country, relationality, Yarning, embodied and nonverbal expression, and externalization. In addition, this piece contributes to decolonized visual methodologies by showcasing a method that enables participants to embody the inseparability of Country and Indigenous identities and, in line with relationality in Indigenous knowledge systems, to bring together, at least visually and physically, the individual, the sacred, and the lived worlds. The dataset file is accompanied by a teaching guide and a student guide.
