This guide offers creative facilitation techniques for participatory action research (PAR) rooted in an ethic of care. PAR is a form of community-engaged inquiry that recognizes the importance of lived experience expertise in investigating and changing social environments. In practice, participatory approaches to research can be constrained by institutional conditions and sensibilities, resulting in a notable gap between participatory intentions and participatory practices, often replicating the power imbalances and extractive research relationships that PAR is intending to remedy. Drawing on community-based collaborative design traditions and grassroots collective activist work, this guide presents four key considerations for supporting genuine participatory engagement with diverse participants developed as part of a doctoral research project (Dilkes, 2026): (1) naming and addressing power imbalances, (2) supporting multiple access needs by inviting different forms of participation, (3) prioritizing relationship building and trust, and (4) recognizing the complexities of working across difference.
