This case study focuses on understanding the methodological challenges encountered while conducting sensitive research on substance use, ensuring inclusivity, among female undergraduate students, particularly in Jammu, India. The original research investigated the prevalence rate of substance use among female college students, identified the risk factors and the role of protective factors against substance use. This quantitative, cross-sectional study included data from 200 female undergraduates using standardized questionnaires while adhering to systematic procedures and ethical standards. The case study specifically focuses on managing challenges concerning sensitivity and inclusivity. Due to the sensitive nature of the original research, handling the stigma, getting willing participants and ensuring unbiased responses posed a major challenge which was managed by being empathetic, nonjudgmental, adaptive and displaying unconditional positive regard. Other measures taken to address the sensitivity included respecting the participants, using clear, gentle, and nonprovocative language, getting written informed consent, being culturally aware following ethical guidelines, and being aware of distress. The inclusivity was ensured by including all willing female undergraduate students and not excluding any participants based on religion, caste, socioeconomic status, family structure, parental education or occupation. This case study can help students and researchers doing similar work learn methodological procedures such as designing sensitive questions, ethically compliant and inclusive data collection from vulnerable groups, ensuring anonymity, and reflective and ethical report writing. The students can also learn to understand and overcome challenges while ensuring inclusivity, especially when working with sensitive groups or handling sensitive topics and recommending precautions and best practices.
