- Summary:
- Utilizing ethnographic methods to study marginalized and vulnerable communities offers opportunities for a deep, emic, and holistic understanding of the lived experiences of participants. Through immersion in the field, ethnographers engage closely with the communities they study, which demands both sensitivity and reflexivity to ensure ethical engagement with participants. Drawing upon my 16 months of ethnographic fieldwork with platform food-delivery riders in China, this guide examines practical and ethical strategies for entering the field, cultivating rapport, managing positionality, and sustaining reciprocal relationships with participants. It highlights the dilemmas and challenges that may emerge in these encounters and proposes realistic strategies for addressing them. As ethnographers continuously navigate shifting positionalities—from time-to-time insiders, outsiders, or even friends—this guide reflects on how reciprocity shapes these relationships, and discusses the importance of balancing ethical responsibility with the lived complexities of fieldwork.
