Summary:
This How-to Guide grows on a youth empowerment program with estate adolescents in Kelantan, Malaysia, to demonstrate how routine public health activities can be intentionally designed as inclusive research processes. Using a single real-world case, this guide shows how everyday program elements such as planning structures, screening tools, questionnaires, and group activities can be adapted to support dialogue, shared interpretation, and youth participation across the research cycle. Written from the perspective of public health and medical education practitioners, this guide outlines practical strategies for engaging adolescents as contributors rather than solely as research participants. It describes the design of a multisector planning structure, the use of national adolescent health screening tools and a locally developed estate risk-behavior questionnaire as dialogic methods, and the involvement of adolescents in analyzing findings and the co-creatin a wellness module. This guide also addresses methodologic and ethical challenges commonly encountered in community-based research with marginalized adolescents, including negotiating access in close-knit settings, managing gatekeeping, navigating language and literacy differences, responding to research fatigue, and handling sensitive disclosures where referral pathways are limited. Although rooted in public health practice, this guide is written for a cross-disciplinary readership seeking thoughtful, ethical, and practical ways to work with rather than only on marginalized adolescents.
