Summary:
This learning material focuses on conducting and analyzing qualitative research using thematic analysis to explore ethical decision-making within research oversight. Thematic analysis is important because it offers a systematic yet flexible approach—whether deductive (guided by existing literature), inductive (emerging directly from data), or a combination of both—to identifying, analyzing, and interpreting patterns within qualitative data. It enables researchers to move beyond surface-level responses to uncover deeper meanings, relationships, and insights, thereby giving voice to participants’ experiences and fostering a richer understanding of complex social, cultural, or ethical issues. The dataset comprises eight in-depth, semistructured interviews with members of Institutional Ethics Committees (IECs) in Mangalore, Karnataka, India, examining their perspectives on the ethical permissibility of deception through partial disclosure in human subjects research (Akuma & Vaswani, 2025b). Participants were selected using purposive and theoretical sampling methods to ensure relevance and data saturation. The dataset was transcribed, anonymized, and coded using NVivo 15 software, following Braun and Clarke’s six-step thematic analysis framework. Learners will gain hands-on experience in qualitative data analysis, including open and focused coding, category development, and interpretation of ethical themes such as informed consent, risk assessment, deception, and the role of ethics committees. The dataset also provides insight into qualitative research design, participant recruitment, ethical approvals, and data management practices, offering a comprehensive overview of applied bioethics and regulatory ethics in a real-world setting. This material is ideal for students and researchers in social science, public health, and research ethics who wish to develop practical skills in thematic analysis, qualitative coding in NVivo 15, and ethical evaluation of research practices. Keywords include: deception in research, partial disclosure, ethics committee, informed consent, qualitative interview, thematic analysis, NVivo15, bioethics, and research oversight. The dataset file is accompanied by a Teaching Guide, a Student Guide and How-to Guide.
