- Summary:
- In this Case Study, I examine the research processes associated with conducting interviews and participant observation in postconflict communities across Colombia between 2019 and 2024. I emphasize the importance of conducting fieldwork in rural areas and understanding how to avoid methods that are only extractive in exchange for mutually beneficial approaches. Site-intensive techniques and culturally sensitive approaches that emphasize trust building are essential in these environments. Over 5 years, I conducted 73 interviews, participant observation, and 10 months of fieldwork in 13 departments across Colombia, trying to better understand women’s motivations for participation in a rebel group as well as the challenges experienced during the peace and reincorporation processes. This Case Study will help readers learn how to be more inclusive of their participants when conducting fieldwork, which will lead to better outcomes for both the community and the researcher.
