Summary:

This research project aimed to improve citizen’s quality of life in neighborhoods of a Dutch city. For this purpose, action research was conducted with active inclusion of citizens and local professionals. Two group facilitation methods were applied in four workshops: Group Model Building (GMB) and Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA). GMB acquired participants’ personal stories, experiences, viewpoints, and knowledge. It resulted in a shared model of factors, relationships, and feedback loops that explain the quality of life. This model informed the MCDA process in which participants developed options for change and decision criteria. Each option was scored for each criteria to come to a prioritization. A variety of data was collected, like audio recordings, model outputs, criteria, and option ideas. Data analysis was conducted on GMB model output, criteria, and options. The research process included several challenges in language use, the connection of GMB model output to MCDA option development, and homogeneity of group composition. Navigating these challenges required flexibility and adaptability of the research team with regard to the original research plan and scientific terminology on facilitating and reporting. The main focus remained on building shared understanding, developing change options, and avoiding premature consensus and closure. Readers will learn about the characteristics, design, and practice of community-focused action research using GMB and MCDA, and related facilitation attitudes, skills, and reflections about methodological choices. It is intended for students at a postgraduate level and beyond interested in group work, interdisciplinary and inclusive research, and strategy formation.
