Summary:
Participatory creative methods are often treated as inclusive by default, as if collaboration and art-making automatically redistribute power and protect participants. This guide takes the opposite starting point: Even participatory workshops can reproduce coercion, inequality, and interpretive extraction, especially when reflexivity is reduced to a brief positionality statement or a compliance exercise. Writing as a researcher-practitioner working across arts-based, feminist, and anti-colonial approaches, I treat reflexivity as method—that is, a repeated practice of attending to how my positioning shapes design choices, facilitation, documentation, and the meanings that are later made from creative outputs. The guide draws primarily from my involvement in the Sexual Health and Empowerment Program of Oxfam (SHE) Conversations through Arts Project, a four-year initiative on sexual and reproductive health and rights in the Philippines. It also contains insights from conversations with social justice advocates and community partners. This guide offers replicable procedures for inclusive and adaptive data collection in participatory creative workshops. These include:The aim is practical: to support student researchers in doing reflexivity in ways that are visible, accountable, and responsive to context and to help readers evaluate participatory research beyond claims of “safe space” or “inclusion”.
