Summary:
This practice Dataset was generated as part of a collaborative ethnographic study carried out in Foundation Stage 2 classrooms (children aged 4–5 years). The purpose of the study and of the detailed analysis of children’s and teachers’ interactions was to develop a more inclusive frame for understanding and engaging with children’s communication, acknowledging the weight of multiple modalities in their communicative actions, beyond speech. In analyzing these interactions, learners are invited to reflect on the sequencing of actions, the temporality of communicative actions, and the ways in which actions by one participant produce actions from another (Mondada, 2016).Transcripts 1–3 present a multimodal transcription of video material through the use of a combination of Jefferson’s transcription for spoken interactions (2004) and Mondada’s transcription conventions for embodied interaction (2022, 2018). In each of the transcripts, a table listing the transcription conventions applied is included. It is recommended that learners familiarize themselves with these conventions in order to understand the notation applied in text and get a better feel for how the interactions unfolded.By applying multimodal conversation analysis, learners will be able to engage with the data on a deeper level, noticing and capturing for analysis children’s use of their full communicative repertoire, including embodied action. This approach to analysis will be particularly useful for researchers who are interested in how translanguaging happens between young children or for researchers who are seeking to adopt a more inclusive lens to understanding young children’s communication. Adopting an inclusive translanguaging framing of language and communication is becoming increasingly important as a way to counter deficit conceptions of young children’s language as lacking and deficient when measured against normative standards such as vocabulary size, clarity of speech, and confidence in speaking. The Dataset file is accompanied by a Teaching Guide, a Student Guide, and a How-to Guide.
