Summary:
This Case Study draws from our qualitative research exploring how licensed psychotherapists understand and respond to the growing use of generative artificial intelligence in clinical practice. Using semistructured virtual focus groups supported by a brief demographic survey, we sought to give practitioners a meaningful space to share their experiences, concerns, and insights. While our method generated rich discussion, it also revealed practical and ethical challenges common in qualitative research, including navigating confidentiality in group settings, managing recruitment with limited resources, and reconciling the difference between textbook procedures and applied practice. This Case Study will be especially useful for early-career researchers and students learning to design qualitative studies in emerging areas of practice. Readers will learn the importance of collaborating with knowledgeable others and adapting flexibly while upholding strong ethical foundations. By illustrating how qualitative research unfolds in real time, this Case Study offers practical guidance to help researchers translate methodologic principles into meaningful real-world inquiry.
