Summary:

Research has identified differences in cognitive processing in children with ADHD, as well as considerable overlap between disorders (e.g., ADHD and autism). However, this research has largely been conducted in high-income countries. We developed a remote, online task to evaluate processing of faces and emotion—which allowed us to collect data from a broader range of young people in a low/middle income country (LMIC) such as Mexico.This case study describes the challenges we faced, for instance, in recruiting and screening diagnosed individuals and enhancing data quality. Conducting the study entirely online made it possible to recruit more diverse participants, and our results reveal differences in performance across groups of participants with different neurodevelopmental disorders. Our study is useful for researchers interested in cognition and development and testing underrepresented populations. Readers will learn about the benefits and limitations of online assessments and what to think about when applying this to their own research practice. We also discuss the impact that inclusive research could have on global mental health equity.
