Summary:

In recent years, Quantitative Critical Race Theory (QuantCrit) has gained momentum as a theoretical and methodologic approach in the field of education, increasingly taken up by researchers seeking to reconfigure quantitative and mixed-methods designs as instruments for advancing social and racial justice. As quantitative scholars in special education, we are particularly drawn to QuantCrit as a means of challenging the misuse of statistics, where numbers are evidenced to support the use of special education as a mechanism for resegregating Students of Color from general pre-K–12 classrooms. In this Case Study, we provide a step-by-step account of how we applied QuantCrit in our research, sharing insights along the way about our methodologic decision making to transform advanced quantitative techniques to align with QuantCrit’s aims. We set out to design an anti-racist research initiative for the purpose of advancing inclusionary practices and policies in general and special education. Our case study shows an example of developing a QuantCrit counterstory using Critical Structural Equation Modeling and Critical Race Transformative mixed methods to challenge deficit-oriented research and unjust practices in special education, such as resegregation. Resulting from this research, we articulate a transformative vision rooted in anti-racism and anti-ableism—ensuring that all students who require special education services receive equitable, high-quality, and culturally relevant and responsive learning experiences that expand their future opportunities.
