Summary:

This dataset introduces readers to a linguistic justice approach to qualitative data. This inclusive frame helps researchers investigate power dynamics and unequal relations embedded in the study of language, literacy, discourse, and/or communication practices. A linguistic justice approach accounts for the following: language—multilingualism and cross-cultural experience/perspectives as an asset; people— brokers of language and information who acknowledge power dynamics; and contexts—micro and macro spaces or contexts where language rights are denied, limited, or scrutinized. The approach to data can be applied in various contexts, including schools, institutions, corporations, and organizations in order to explore communication practices in unequal power structures. This dataset includes two interview transcripts with two immigrants from a community in a Midwestern urban context. Both transcripts, each of roughly five to seven pages, are excerpts from longer interviews. The interview data come from a larger ethnographic study of immigrant literacy in the respective community. Ligia A. Mihut conducted this research over the course of two years, when she collected 32 interviews with community members and attended community events, book launches, and cultural festivals in the community. Beyond this novel research approach to qualitative data, this piece shows that while linguistic justice has been used as frame for pedagogies of language pluralism, it has yet to be adopted in research and data analysis. The data exemplar is accompanied by a teaching guide and a student guide.
