Summary:

This dataset exemplifies the use of drawing to represent oral history at an Indigenous community from the Colombian Andes. Drawing inspiration from the methodology mapas parlantes (talkative maps) (Barragán León, 2016), this type of representation aims to facilitate access to social discussion about key historical moments and social problems. This collection of 42 images depicts some of the most critical moments in Misak history. Located in the Colombian southwest, this community has been able to maintain its cultural uniqueness despite colonialist imposition via subjugation, exploitation, racism, exclusion, and formal education. This data resulted from more than 20 months of traditional (e.g., archival work and oral history) and Indigenous (e.g., walking throughout the territory and dream analysis) research. Conducted by three community members and an external, non-Indigenous scholar from 2013 to 2015, this research aimed to contribute to collective memory practices that help preserve decolonial memory among community members. Social scientists can use this dataset in two ways. First, it can provide clues about this specific Andean community. Second, users can use this dataset as an example to formulate their own memory collection and documentation. The dataset file is accompanied by a teaching guide and a student guide.
