Summary:
This guide draws on a codesigned, creative-practice-based Hip Hop research project developed on a shoestring budget. Grounded in long-term research with Hip Hop artists in Khayelitsha, South Africa, this guide briefly tracks the development of creative collaboration from the early stages of doctoral fieldwork, through to a codesigned project with activist collective Soundz of the South to provide an example of how this might play out in practice. Drawing on decolonial and feminist scholarship, the guide provides both theoretical grounding and methodological reflection. It demonstrates how relationship building and creative collaboration can move research beyond extraction to co-creation, outside of bigger funded projects and research groups, offering a transformative approach that produces knowledge with cultural resonance for/with communities.
