Summary:
The field of gender and sexuality diversity research is an area of increasing interest and increasing scrutiny. As a group that has been historically under-supported by wider societies in various cultural contexts, gender and sexuality diverse communities have often had research conducted “on” them instead of “with” them. In this guide I explain how researchers can improve research engagement and take responsibility for the ethics of their research by applying principles of intersectionality and community-led methodologies to their research engagement. This guide also explores the sensitivities of language in a gender and sexuality research context and ends with guidance on practical changes to make to research design, conduct and dissemination that help to redress some of the power imbalance between researchers and participants/collaborators within gender and sexuality diverse communities.
