- Summary:
- This case study draws on original ethnographic fieldwork conducted with hijra and transgender communities across India, undertaken to examine their lived realities in the post-NALSA (2014) legal landscape. It focuses on the methodological and practical challenges of researching a historically marginalized, hard-to-reach, and culturally distinct population. The case study highlights core issues encountered during fieldwork, including negotiating access as an outsider, navigating community gatekeeping, managing mistrust rooted in colonial surveillance, addressing ethical dilemmas during sensitive disclosures, and adapting research tools for participants with diverse sociocultural and literacy backgrounds. It also discusses limitations of snowball sampling, the need for redundancy in field strategies, risks of voyeurism, and the importance of feminist-ethnographic care in building rapport. This case study will be useful for researchers working with hidden, vulnerable, or stigmatized populations, particularly in gender, sexuality, public health, anthropology, and social policy research. Readers will learn how to design flexible, context-responsive methodologies; recognize intra-community diversity; ensure ethical and culturally grounded practices; and adopt adaptive sampling strategies. The lessons offered here aim to strengthen researchers’ reflexivity and support the development of inclusive, responsible, and community-engaged research practices.
