- Summary:
- In this study, we engaged emerging adults with intellectual disability enrolled in an inclusive postsecondary education (IPSE) program in the United States to better understand their knowledge of and perspectives on specific topics related to romantic relationships and sexuality. This historically marginalized population is often overprotected in many domains of life, and comprehensive sexuality and relationship education may be withheld. In an effort to better prepare these young adults to understand their rights and responsibilities related to sex and dating as they engage on a college campus, we aimed to collect information about their current knowledge of these topics using an accessible card sort method. Traditional Likert-style surveys are often inaccessible and not created with the support needs and preferences of individuals with intellectual disability in mind. In contrast, card sort methods—whether conducted in-person with physical materials or virtually—offer a more inclusive and engaging alternative for collecting similar types of data. This paper outlines the card sort approach we used and details its implementation in both formats.
