Summary:
This case is based on a study examining narratives about women’s return-to-work journeys that were posted on two Malaysian state-linked websites to encourage mothers on career breaks to rejoin the workforce. The study analyzed the language of women’s empowerment used in these narratives and the absences of migrant domestic workers from the stories. In Malaysia, where women still do more caregiving, these low-wage workers “free” middle-class mothers to pursue careers and thus can be reasonably expected to be present in the narratives. By analyzing their discursive absence, the study was able to show that although the stories spoke the language of women’s empowerment and equality of opportunities, they reinforced hierarchies between well-educated women citizens and their poor migrant counterparts. This case explains how these absences were systematically identified and examined. It describes and demonstrates a set of linguistic tools for readers to locate, analyze, and evince what is absent in their data in a way that is transparent, verifiable, and reproducible. It is useful for undergraduate students who want to learn how to make visible marginalized groups who have been rendered invisible, retrieve their suppressed experiences, and expose taken-for-granted hierarchies.
