- Summary:
- This guide outlines a framework for cultivating collaborative practices across disciplines and institutional contexts in social research. Drawing on anticolonial ethics, the guide examines how research cultures often reproduce asymmetries of power and seeks to unsettle these dynamics by revisiting the approaches to collaboration and trust built on them. The guide defines research as collaboration, collaboration in research practice as a horizontal community, and principles of trust not as an abstract value but as a practice embedded in ongoing relations of accountability, care, and reciprocity. The guide discusses everyday negotiations through which participants and researchers establish shared ground, emphasizing that trust emerges less from formal agreements than from a sustained willingness to listen, adapt, and remain vulnerable to one another's perspectives. It argues that building trust is then a continual process through which research itself acquires depth, legitimacy, and ethical grounding. The guide reflects on how approaching research as a horizontal community of knowledge and mutual learning changes the notion of authorship, references, researchers, participation, and research material. The authors provide tools and examples of how such processes unfold in practice, including collective decision-making with students and community partners, using two sites as case studies: the Solmaz Collective, a research group from Norway and Sweden, and the Literacies in Second Languages Project, a research lab in Colombia. These cases illuminate how trust is enacted through situated practices of dialogue, improvisation, and shared responsibility. The guide will discuss the research protocols and principles that emerge during collaboration and continue to shape it. The guide will outline the possibilities for applying these experiences in other disciplinary and geographical scenarios.
