Summary:
This case study is an exploration of a research project conducted at a university in the United States, focusing on understanding how a community-engaged approach can support Latinx communities in navigating employment systems. Guided by the promotora framework, this study examined how centering community relationships could transform transactional research practices into a relational and ethical source to support local knowledge as legitimate ways of knowing. Initially designed only as a longitudinal quantitative study, the project was adapted to include a qualitative component to offer participants the opportunity to co-construct their realities in their own words and language. Promotores (i.e., community workers) played a central role in all stages of research engagement, which was rooted in mutual trust and cultural responsiveness. Data were collected through three survey time points and qualitative interviews. Qualitative data were analyzed using a narrative thematic approach. The case study highlights how relational ethics, linguistic inclusion, and community leadership can transform research into a site of collaboration rather than extraction of information. The goal of this chapter is to offer practical guidance for researchers seeking to design community-engaged studies that center participant accounts while honoring the complexity of lived experience.
