Summary:

Research in custodial settings presents distinct ethical, relational, and methodologic challenges, particularly when working with Aboriginal women whose lives have been shaped by colonization, dispossession, and intersecting systems of surveillance and control. This How-to Guide draws on a case study from the Missing Girls: From Runaway Girl to Criminalised Woman project, an Australian Research Council–funded study exploring girls’ and women’s experiences of going missing or running away during adolescence. Focusing on fieldwork conducted in regional New South Wales, this guide uses an interview-style format to present the research reflections of three team members, highlighting the relational decisions and cultural considerations. We argue that when grounded in culturally informed, relational, and restorative methodologies, research in custodial environments can create spaces of connection, learning, and reciprocity.
