Summary:

The importance of intercultural competence in domestic violence service provision and training has only recently been recognized. In fast-changing, multicultural societies, it is crucial that health professionals adapt their established ways of thinking in order to respond more effectively to domestic violence. This research endeavor outlines a new bio-sociocultural approach to improve the cultural responsiveness of domestic violence trainings for inclusive, trauma-informed health environments. The theory is supported by initial empirical data from a pilot eye-tracking experiment which documents the transformation in perception required to act on knowledge and ‘recognize’ instead of ‘reify’ difference. These novel insights encourage students to meaningfully conceive cultural responsive and trauma-informed research designs. Guidelines for transformative training designs are derived from these. The Intercultural Competence Training Handbook for Domestic Violence Trainers of the VIPROM (Victim Protection in Medicine) project, which was cofunded by the European Union, is outlined as a case study for designing culturally responsive, thus more effective, domestic violence training programs. This project aims to advance the transformational potential of domestic violence trainings through cultural responsiveness and creativity.
