Summary:

This case study explores the methodological decisions and ethical considerations involved in conducting feminist decolonial research within a case study of Azerbaijani Turk women in Iran, an ethnonational minority group facing multiple forms of marginalization. Drawing on 15 in-depth interviews conducted for a master’s thesis, I focus on how three narratives emerged as case studies due to their depth, complexity, and insight into navigating gendered and political repression. It reflects on how feminist standpoint theory and intersectional analysis informed the research questions, trust-building strategies, data collection, and adaptations made in response to safety risks, state surveillance, and insider–outsider dynamics. The study emphasizes the need for flexibility in design, collaborative meaning-making, and relational ethics when researching within politically repressive environments. It offers practical guidance for researchers conducting qualitative work in similar contexts, especially when seeking to center silenced voices without reproducing extractive or essentializing practices.
