- Summary:
- This Case Study draws from a doctoral research study on the design and use of space in Scotland’s first operational Barnahus (“Bairns’ Hoose”) service. A Barnahus is a multidisciplinary approach that supports children after the identification of abuse. Barnahus agencies are based broadly in child protection, justice, health, and recovery, with professionals based in one building to provide services to children (The Barnahus Network, 2017). This Case Study explores the development of arts-based research methodologies designed to learn from children and young people who have experience of abuse. The method discussed in this Case Study was designed to explore how children feel and experience spaces and environments and to explore what things in a space can help to make children and young people to feel safe (or not). This Case Study explores the development of the method of a sensory focus group in the wider context of trauma-informed research practices and working with children in research. Contemporary understanding on how Barnahus, or Bairns’ Hoose, spaces can be designed for children’s recovery from trauma and the purpose of multiagency work remains elusive. This research sought to understand how the design of Barnahus spaces can function for the many outcomes of the model, learning from research participants particularly on spatial design that suits their complex and individual needs. Knowledge was gathered from the perspectives of children and their families who have experience of abuse and professionals who work in the Bairns’ Hoose service in Scotland in strategic and operational roles.
