- Summary:
- This guide presents positionality as an integral part of a wider practice of reflexivity to be integrated into every stage of the research process, from the study design, through collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data, to writing up and evaluating results. In the first part, the guide argues that positionality should be understood as relational, processual, and context-specific. It is relational because it includes considering how various elements of a researcher’s personal and social selves inform the relations with those a researcher studies or claims to represent in the study’s findings and conclusions. It is processual because both the various circumstances and the research itself may change a researcher’s positions relative to the study and study participants. It is context-specific because it is affected by the intersectionalities of researchers’ and participants’ identities and by the different social settings they navigate. In the second part, the guide offers suggestions on how to practice positionality at every research stage. For the study design stage, it highlights the possible relationships with participants and the consequences of these relationships in sampling, access, recruitment, and the choice of methods. For the data collection stage, it recommends systematically documenting expectations, assumptions, feelings, and reflections, and then returning to these records in data analysis, to use them as a check against unsupported or premature conclusions and undue trust or skepticism in the interpretations. Finally, this guide concludes that transparent and purposive reporting on positionality is necessary to evaluate the trustworthiness of a study’s findings and conclusions.
