Summary:

Research with LGBTQ+ communities and neurodivergent populations has historically been shaped by practices that often marginalized, pathologized, or excluded the very people it sought to understand (Grove et al., 2025). Traditional approaches have tended to prioritize rigid methodological frameworks over participant well-being, resulting in the potential risk of trauma of negative impacts on the mental well-being of participants. This guide responds to those gaps by offering researchers across career stages a practical and principled framework for conducting participatory research that is neuro-inclusive, LGBTQ+-affirming, and trauma-informed.This guide aims to support first-time and more experienced researchers in designing and conducting participatory research that centers the concepts of respect, autonomy, and care. It also seeks to address the imbalance for communities who have too often been treated as subjects rather than collaborators, considering how we ensure that research outputs are meaningful, accessible, and accountable to those most affected. By embedding neuro-inclusion and trauma-informed practice into participatory methods, researchers can move beyond tokenistic involvement toward genuine co-production and shared ownership of knowledge.
