Summary:

In our original study, we found strong positive relationships between perceptions of campus climate and behavioral engagement for LGBTQ+ undergraduates at 4-year colleges and universities in the United States. Using person-centered methodologic approaches to explore our large-scale multi-institutional dataset, we discovered a clear connection between the institutional environment and student behavior. This Case Study outlines how our study diverged from traditional variable-centered methodologies, which often treat the LGBTQ+ experience as monolithic. Additionally, we highlight the challenges of working with complex identity data and offer options for collecting, analyzing, and discussing demographics, including gender identity and sexual orientation. We hope to inspire future quantitative researchers to be more inclusive and critical in their work, thereby better capturing the experiences of student populations sometimes silenced or oversimplified.
