In a world where objectivity, quantifiable measures, and neutral observations are still viewed by many as the most reliable forms of knowledge in the social sciences, art-based methods offer an opportunity to amplify our perspectives and to value the emotions, bodies, and stories that make knowledge human. This wide range of creative practices—such as drawing, storytelling, photography, performance, and music—enables us to explore questions and share experiences in engaging and accessible ways with groups and communities that historically have been excluded from academic research. These commitments closely align with the values of decolonial and feminist approaches that seek to center marginalized people in knowledge creation and to promote transformative political agendas. Building on existing literature and my doctoral research, this How-to Guide presents epistemic and practical considerations for incorporating a feminist decolonial approach into art-based methods in qualitative research. Through a reflective overview of my use of body mapping and participatory mapping, I highlighted opportunities, lessons learned, and common challenges in this field, along with strategies for overcoming them. The flexibility and openness of these methods invite us to relinquish control and embrace the beautiful, often messy path of creative and knowledge creation.
