Summary:

This case study is based on my doctoral ethnographic research with stateless indigenous communities in Sarawak, Malaysia. By employing a case-based ethnographic approach, I drew on the narratives of individuals and communities in rural Sarawak to look at how legal invisibility is produced and experienced at the margins of the state. The case study presented here focuses on research design, fieldwork strategies, and methodological challenges of working with stateless and marginalized communities. I critically evaluate the choice of case study ethnography, the process of gaining access, and the ways in which power imbalances and ethical dilemmas shaped my role as a researcher. Through these challenges, the case demonstrates how case study ethnography can be adapted to politically sensitive contexts. It highlights the importance of reflexivity in managing insider–outsider positionality, flexibility in data collection methods, and ethical responsibility in representing vulnerable communities.The research shows how to design and adapt field methods in settings where populations are legally unrecognized, reflect critically on their role as researchers, and develop ethically grounded approaches to studying statelessness, migration, and structural exclusion.
