Summary:
The language of “trauma-informed” care and practice is now ubiquitous across social justice sectors. As the terminology has swept across different fields there has been an increased focus on how organizations can understand and implement trauma-informed principles. More recently, the language of “trauma-informed” has also been adopted by researchers, particularly those working with groups with known trauma histories. Researchers have recognized the value, and ethical obligation, of designing and undertaking research that works to these same key principles. Yet often this requires researchers to add an “additional lens” to a plethora of other popular frameworks and approaches. As an illustrative example, in working with children and young people who have experienced child sexual exploitation (CSE), these young people straddle multiple identities as both “children” and “survivors,” meaning research approaches should arguably also be child-centered, child rights–based, and survivor-informed. The multitude of these frameworks can be overwhelming and confusing for researchers. This How-to Guide seeks to make sense of this confusion by exploring the key tenants of trauma-informed approaches, other popular frameworks for researching with children and young people, and; guidance for researching with survivors. In comparing these approaches, we can then consider what additional, or complementary elements these frameworks add to a trauma-informed lens.
